7 Reasons you should take on 100 Miles in October

Each year hundreds of Scots take on the Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) 100 Miles in October challenge.

Last year over £155k was collectively raised for our life-saving, frontline service, making this annual challenge hugely impactful to helping the charity save and improve more lives throughout Scotland.

Our October challenge proves popular every year partly due to the fact that participants have the ability to choose how they want to complete their miles. Typically, we see many walkers, runners, cyclists and swimmers take on the challenge but it’s also great to see some of the more unique methods people adopt such as horse riding, rowing, or those who opt to mix and match how they complete their miles.

Here’s seven reasons why you should get involved this year…

EMBRACE THE OUTDOORS THIS AUTUMN

As the nights begin to draw in after the summer sun, it can be difficult to maintain the momentum for time outdoors. In summer it’s easy to spend time outside, with ample light still available after work hours and pleasant conditions to enjoy. Signing up for a challenge of 100 Miles in October offers the perfect opportunity to ensure you keep moving and still prioritise time outdoors.

SUPPORT YOUR LIFE-SAVING AIR AMBULANCE SERVICE

The support collectively raised from our 100 Miles in October challenge has a significant effect on helping to preserve our life-saving charity service. Every year, we are blown away by the level of support generated from this challenge. Every pound raised will help keep our crew flying and responding to critical accidents and medical emergencies all over the country. Your efforts throughout this challenge will have a direct impact in helping to save and help someone on their darkest day.

MAKE YOURSELF PROUD

We see many inspiring stories of people pushing themselves to achieve their 100 Mile target. Many even opt to double or triple this target, especially if they’re on a bike. We can guarantee that when you tick off that final 100 mile and know that you have contributed to help save lives in Scotland, the sense of pride and feeling of accomplishment is deeply felt.

KEEP A HEALTHY ROUTINE

The health benefits of staying active and moving one’s body can’t be overlooked during this challenge. Having the daily motivation to get out and clock up some miles for a charitable cause can help many create a healthy routine for October. Moving your body with daily exercise, whether walking, running, cycling or using your wheelchair boasts many health benefits.

PRIORITISE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Not only is it good for the body, but we’ve heard from past participants about the positive impact it can have on mental health. Fresh air, daily achievements, time out for yourself, and time in nature can all contribute to an uplift in mood and help keep spirits high.

CONNECT WITH LIKEMINDED PEOPLE

Feedback from previous challenges has always highlighted how much participants enjoyed being a part of the Facebook challenge group. Hundreds of members share their updates, local scenery, pet companions, fundraising advice, and help encourage each other along the way. The level of enthusiasm for the challenge was infectious, and it was amazing to see how engaged and motivated everyone stayed during the month.

FLEXIBILITY TO DO WHAT YOU ENJOY

One of the reasons for the success of 100 Miles in October lies in the flexibility the challenge offers. The fact participants can complete their miles however and whenever they choose, means people of all ages, job types, and locations can get involved. We love seeing the locations of all those taking part, and the inventive ways some people decide to achieve their 100 Miles. The more creative the better!
