Mission Review

Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance operates two helicopter air ambulances - Helimed 76 based in Perth and Helimed 79 based in Aberdeen. Tasked through Scotland's 999 emergency response network, here are just some of the call outs we've responded to recently.

SCAA's Helimed 76 was first on the scene when a walker fell 40 feet down a boulder field at Ben Vorlich. Our air ambulance helicopter landed on flat ground below the incident and SCAA paramedics then climbed the hill to reach and care for the patient. Working alongside the local Mountain Rescue Team, a Coastguard helicopter was then called in from Prestwick to winch the injured man from the challenging hillside location and transfer him to hospital.

SCAA's Helimed 79 recently had a critical care team at the scene of a serious road traffic collision near Insch within 10 minutes. Doctors and paramedics were then available to treat the injured at the scene in the shortest time possible following the collision between a car and a motorcycle.

In the east of Scotland, a teenage rugby player injured in a game in St. Andrews was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre in Dundee in just minutes by Helimed 76. Our paramedics worked worked with an off-duty doctor, local first aiders and Scottish Ambulance Service road crew colleagues at the scene.

Over in the west of Scotland, SCAA ensured a pregnant woman received urgent medical care at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley after a short but time-saving flight from the Lorn and Islands Hospital in Oban.

SCAA paramedics were recently dropped off on Conic Hill above Balmaha to reach an injured walker, with our air ambulance then relocating to the bottom of the slope. Lomond Mountain Rescue Team was on hand to stretcher the injured woman to the waiting helicopter before she was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.
