Mission Review

Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance operates two helicopter air ambulances - Helimed 76 based in Perth and Helimed 79 based in Aberdeen. Tasked through Scotland's 999 emergency response network, our air ambulances can reach 90% of the population within 25 minutes to get people the help they need as quickly as possible.

A woman who recently suffered a stroke at her home in Strathmore was airlifted speedily by SCAA to critical care at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee in just minutes. SCAA was able to fly directly to the remote countryside home and land nearby, allowing paramedics fast access to the patient.

SCAA recently deployed both an air ambulance and a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) to an emergency on a hillside near the charity’s Perth Airport base. The aircraft landed near the injured woman at the top of the hill, while the paramedic in the RRV made his way up from lower ground to provide additional support. The woman, who suffered lower leg injuries in a fall, was then airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee in just minutes.

SCAA's Helimed 79 air ambulance was flying back to base from an earlier mission in Banff when the aircraft and crew - including a critical care team - were redeployed to a nearby road traffic collision in Portsoy. Landing quickly at the scene, the SCAA team treated a motorcyclist who had sustained arm injuries in the accident. He was then taken to hospital for further treatment.

SCAA was one of two air ambulances sent to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision on the A96 near Culsalmond recently. Paramedics flew a critical care team to the accident and helped treat multiple casualties at the scene. The most seriously injured were taken to hospital by air and land ambulances.

SCAA was part of a multi-service response to a serious road traffic collision near Macduff recently. Our air ambulance - carrying a doctor-led emergency medical team - joined colleagues from Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service's Special Operations Response Team (SORT) to assist at the scene. SCAA then airlifted a casualty to the Major Trauma Centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary - just 20 minutes away by air.

SCAA's Helimed 76 air ambulance was able to land close to a walker injured in a fall on Dumyat near Stirling recently. Our helicopter crew was first on scene and worked with colleagues from the Scottish Ambulance Service's Special Operations Response Team (SORT) before airlifting the patient to specialist care at the Major Trauma Centre at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

SCAA recently airlifted a specialist team to Glenshee in response to a snow sports accident on the slopes. A man was injured in a fall and SCAA's crew worked with the centre’s Ski Patrol and land ambulance crew colleagues at the scene.
